What Is A Mastermind Group?

Personal Development for Career Professionals

Before I joined the john Maxwell Team, I had never heard of a mastermind group. I thought “mastermind” referred to the British tv show that I grew up with as a child. now, it seams that every second person I run into is attending a mastermind group.

The concept of a mastermind group is not a new one. In fact, it has been around for almost 80 years. The concept of a mastermind group was first mentioned by Napoleon Hill in his book “Think and Grow Rich”, in 1937.

Mastermind groups are not just for business owners or investors. They are for anyone who wants to get together with a group of people and brainstorm, discuss ideas, and learn from each other on a particular subject.

The first mastermind group i ever attended was on John C Maxwell’s book “The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership”. I decided to join the group, as I wanted to improve the results I was getting in my first business. There were around ten of us in the group, and we used to meet each week, over the phone, to discuss the 2 chapters of the book that we had read over the previous week. The group was diverse, and consisted of Government employees, mothers, students and business owners.

It wasn’t a book club though. We had a facilitator, who had studied the book in great detail, who guided our discussion with thought provoking questions. She also made sure that everyone got a chance to share ideas and ask questions. The more we put into the group, the more we got out of it.

While I was expecting improved results in my business, I never expected that attending the mastermind group would affect my whole life. I enjoyed it so much that, I jumped at the chance to attend again later that year. This second group was with different people, and so I got a lot of new insight into the book that I hadn’t the first time around.

One thing that has come out of attending various mastermind groups, which I didn’t expect, is the new friends that I have made, and the support we have been able to give each other outside the groups. The concepts that I learnt, and the support and encouragement that I received from the group members, gave me the courage to retire my sick guide dog, learn to use a long cane again, and travel half way around the world on my own.

At the end of August, I will be running a mastermind group on John C Maxwell’s book “Put Your Dream To the Test”. If you are interested in participating in this mastermind, or would like more information, please contact me. Places are limited, and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, so please act now to avoid disappointment.

Thanks for sharing this, it’s important to connect with people who have some of the same objectives you may have. I am looking to learn about how others are hosting masterminds, and I look forward to learning more about what your up to. Thanks for this posting, and I am hoping it’s helping someone else.
